Turn a simple placemat into an adorable apron with this easy tutorial. Perfect for kids, crafts, or gifts—no sewing skills needed!

It’s not every day a home décor item becomes your next favorite DIY project—but that’s exactly what happened when I realized a simple placemat could double as an apron.
This clever little craft is quick, inexpensive, and ridiculously cute—perfect for kids who love to “help” in the kitchen or anyone who appreciates a fun upcycle project.
Here’s how to make your own placemat apron!

DIY Placemat Apron
SUPPLIES –
- placemat
- glue gun
- ribbon
- scissors
- lighter (to seal ribbon edges)

How to Make Placemat Aprons
STEP ONE: If you’re using a perfect rectangle placemat, fold the top corners down slightly and secure them with some hot glue to create a more apron-like shape. MAKE SURE YOU ADD GLUE JUST TO THE VERY EDGE OF THE PLACEMAT SO YOU CAN EASILY SLIDE A RIBBON THROUGH.

STEP TWO: Thread the ribbon up through one folded corner of the placemat and down through the other side, creating a loop in the middle for your child’s head to slip through. Make sure the ribbon tails are long enough to tie comfortably in a bow at the back.

STEP THREE: Burn the edges of the ribbon to keep them from fraying.

And just like that, you’ve transformed a simple placemat into the cutest little apron. It’s a fun, budget-friendly craft that makes a great gift or project to do with your kids.
Once you make one, don’t be surprised if you start looking at every placemat in the store wondering what kind of apron it could become.
