Here are just a few gems from my own family’s archives:

• My oldest son, age 3, once told me he wanted to be a mom when he grows up… “so I don’t have to work.”
• Ryan, in preschool, informed his class that “if you see a dangerous spider, just pick it up and rip off its legs so it can’t chase you.” (Yikes.)
• Mason, age 10, while on a flight, pointed to a man reading a newspaper and said, “Mom, look at that giant magazine that guy is reading.” (Made me feel soooo old that my child had never seen a NEWSPAPER before!)
• Ryan also once asked me if the word pornography was Spanish because he didn’t understand what it meant. (Cue awkward silence.)
• Addie, while working with me on her Valentine’s mailbox, said, “I’m so glad I have a smart parent to help me with my math, and another parent to help me with crafts!” She meant it sweetly, but ouch. I guess I’m the “other” parent, not the “smart” one!
• And my personal favorite? Ryan, deep in thought during a backyard hockey session:
  “I found my stick, but I can’t find the… I’m not trying to say a potty word, but I can’t find the balls!”

Honestly, we quote our kids more than we quote movies. But when they mimic our phrases back to us? That’s when it gets real. Parenting: the ultimate mirror.
