Make a crown in minutes! Perfect for birthdays, dress-up, or a Christmas nativity—this easy DIY crown tutorial is fit for royalty!

For our church Christmas party this year, ,two of my boys were asked to be Wise Men, and these are the felt crowns I created for their costumes. They are fairly simple, and you could go a ton of different directions with them. I will show you what I did:

How To Make A Felt Crown
SUPPLIES –
- Construction paper (to make a template)
- Felt
- Straight pins
- Elastic
- Sewing machine and coordinating thread
- Tacky Glue (optional)

DIRECTIONS –
- Make a crown template. I used extra long construction paper for my template and cut it out into two sizes: 4.5″ x 18″, and 5.5″ by 18″. (The picture above shows 3 different patterns, but I didn’t end up using the middle template because my 7 year old got very upset that I wanted to make one of the crowns without points. But, I think it would have made a cool Wise man Crown!) Once you have your template, fold your felt in half and use your template as a pattern. You will need two crown pieces. Cut them out and then cut 1 piece of elastic that is 4 inches long.
- Sew the 2 crown pieces together. Make sure to insert the elastic into one of the ends. Leave the other end open. (Do NOT sew one end together.)
- Add Shapes/ “Jewels”. Cut out diamonds (or whatever shapes you would like) out of scraps of felt. Pin them in place.
- Sew the diamonds down. This is just to make sure they are nice and secure.
- Alternative: If you don’t want to sew each shape, you can glue them with Tacky glue. I decided since this crown had so many different colors I would glue it instead of sew. Both ways work.
- Secure the Elastic. After all the sewing and glueing is done take the elastic and stretch it to the other side, slip it in between the two felt crown pieces, and sew the last side closed. It should look like this when you are done:

And now my cute Wisemen are ready for their performance!

This is ADORABLE!!!
Thanks Steph! They were sure fun to create. Brayden even helped sew part of his. I am in the beginning stages of teaching him to sew. I love that one of my kids love sewing!
Oh those are too sweet – you’ve done a lovely job!
SO cute!!! I’m pinning this so that I can make a birthday crown for my daughter. 🙂

Oh I am sooooo making these! Thank you for posting the tutorial. We are going home to Spain and I know the kids will love dressing up as the wisemen.
I have a TON of felt left from poodle skirts earlier this year – who says Wisemen can’t have pink crowns (or Wise women!)
